Update July 2015

The St.Davids Community Orchard has now been extended to a second site, situated at the frontage of the soon to be opened, Twr-y-Felin Hotel on Caerfai Road, St. Davids.

Some orchard members, together with children from the Eco clubs of Ysgol Solfach and Ysgol Dewi Sant, planted 14 fruit trees in the grounds of the hotel, with the assistance of the Retreats Group grounds staff. All of the trees have been purchased by the Retreats Group, in their support for the Community Orchard Project and all fruits will be grown organically, in keeping with the ethos of both organisations.

The trees at Twr-y-Felin consist of apples, pears, plums and cooking cherries, and brings the total number of trees currently planted in the orchard to 28.

The orchard has also formed partnerships with Treginnis Farm for City Children, and the Welsh Perry and Cider Society. Treginnis has offered the use of it's walled garden to the orchard project for planting fan trained or espalier fruit trees. An area beyond the walled garden has also been identified as a potential site for planting and expert advice has been sought regarding more robust and resilient fruit varieties that will withstand the conditions. A willow wind break needs to be planted and become established beforehand and it is intended to begin planting the willow during the Autumn of 2015.

Treginnis Farm is keen to strengthen it's links with the St.Davids community and is looking forward to welcoming local schools and orchard members to the farm to learn about orchard maintenance, and for orchard related celebrations and events throughout the year, once the orchard is established.

The St.Davids Community Orchard is one of the projects being included in a Heritage Lottery Fund grant application, being made on our behalf by the Welsh Perry and Cider Society (WPCS). If successful, they aim to provide funding for the purchase of trees, with an emphasis on Welsh Heritage and cider or perry varieties. They will also arrange events such as fruit pressing and cider making sessions, and training in orchard maintenance for those interested in taking part. The St.Davids Community Orchard has been working closely with the WPCS for many months to ensure a successful application.
